Welcome to the first edition of my 2014 goal to take a trip outside my zip code. This is a new travel series in which I discuss my journeys in 2014. I decided to set a travel goal (read resolution) as a way to do something different. I wanted an opportunity to meet new people and do new things.

This month, I got away with a friend to a nearby casino & hotel. We made our decision on Tuesday and traveled  that Friday. With the destination being close (yet outside my zip code), making arrangements was simple. We used a gift certificate she won last year at a silent auction.

TIP: Charity event Silent Auctions are a great place to find trips at affordable prices. Bid at your own risk.

Our trip to Cherokee Casino was quite interesting and fun. We arrived for dinner at 6:30 pm. As we ventured through the casino floor to the restaurant, I noticed a few things:

  • Friday evening are a busy time for slot machine players
  • There were lots of older citizens playing the slots.
  • This is a smoking facility (Note to self: send clothes I’m wearing to dry cleaner next week).
  • Everyone is in their own world. As we walked by, they glanced at us and quickly turned back to the machines, their cigarettes and/or the free beverages they were drinking.

The dinner voucher was for a $100 dinner at Flint Creek Steakhouse located near the rear of the casino. I walked in and escaped the noisy chaos of the gaming area. Dinner was great. We were able to order an appetizer, entree and dessert. I had steak fries, white wine, a New York Strip steak, creamed spinach and a slice of cheesecake.

After dinner, we checked out the accommodations. The room was nicely furnished and the bed looked comfy. After a good night’s rest, I ate breakfast, took a quick look at the exhibit in the lobby and proceeded to the Roulette table.

RAMONA learns to play Roulette

I have seen people play Roulette in movies and on TV, but I have never been interested in playing myself…until today. My friend was eager to play and I watched attentively. After a few rounds, I decided to join the game. Roulette is about probability and chance. Pick the right number or combination of numbers, and you win. After about two hours and an investment of $17, I walked away from the table with $120 and a smile on my face. I think I rocked it for my first time playing the game.

In all, my trip outside my zip code was a success. I would recommend escaping every now and then. The Cherokee Casino was a great option. I enjoyed my time there and, I’m looking forward to my adventure in February. That trip is still to be planned.

Where would you go on your next trip outside your zip code or area code?
